Snowflake Challenge #2 - PETS!

When I first heard this challenge I considered posting photos of my pets, but I don't ever put them in cute fandom costumes. They wouldn't dare let me. So I tried to consider the most impactful pets in fiction and fandom and put them in a list. It is sort of strange but well.

MEOWTH
Meowth is the talking cat that helps out team Rocket in Pokemon. It is questionable whether he can be called a pet, since Meowth is an intellegent part of the team and it on equal footing with James and Jessie. But, they do have those shady scenes with the unnamed boss that directs them to do their evil work, and he has a cat that looks like a pet, and is surely senior to Meowth so... I do not have all the Pokemon lore, but Meowth is definitely a fandom character of note.

OLD YELLER
This Disney movie totally slaughtered me as a kid, and I never quite got over it. It is similar in some ways as Dog of Flanders, but I didn't see that one until I was older, so this is my youthful Dog trauma. Yeller was an old dog, but a good dog. He loved his boy, and he always helped with the huntin' but America is a place where those who are not useful can be gotten rid of. The unfairness of it never quite left me.

TOBY - Molly's cat from Sherlock
As a fan of Sherlock from just before the start of Season 2, I was there when the advertising team made fake websites to publicize the show. One of the side characters, Molly, was a forensic scientist with a crush on Sherlock Holmes. Here website talked about how she attempted to get the attention of her crush, Sherlock, but he brushed her off, so she decided to become a "cat lady". The site then uploaded a photo of a kitten that she said she had named TOBY and thus a new Fandom character was born. Toby never made an appearance on the show, but since this was put out by the team, she is considered canon.

Menolly's fire lizards - Dragon singer (Anne McCaffrey)
As a youth, I read the Dragon books by Anne McCaffrey and enjoyed them a lot. I especially liked the books Dragon Song, Dragon Singer, and Dragon Drums in the masterharper of pern trilogy. The fact that Menolly had Seven dragons (fire lizards) was a beautiful touch, and so they may be my favorite fandom pets.

Snowflake Challenge 2025 - #2 Fannish Origin Story

Although I have always been fannish (I was a lurker in #startrek ), my modern entry into FANDOM with a capital F started in 2012 with the BBC show SHERLOCK.

I first posted online about it in 2012, and wrote my first fanfic two months later.

I had been a wannabe #writer since I was a child, but this was my first time to publish anything. Now, I have over153 works with a word count of over 994,010. And most of these were from the #SherlockBBC fandom.

Snowflake Challenge 2024 - #2 GOALS FOR THE YEAR

I made some New Years Goals, and I hope that I can really follow these this year.

2024 Goals
1. Fear Less
So much bad stuff happens because people are afraid. Take chances and don't worry so much about the consequences.

2. Make my body stronger
This isn't about weight. This is about more muscle and less fat on my belly.

3. Make time serve me
I can't control some things, but I know I need cool down time, so plan it into my schedule at the beginning of the year. Also plan in exercise and writing time. Don't make it an extra. It is essential.

As for Fannish Goals

Make my combo fan work - Anatomy for Kpop stars, and finish some of my WIPS

Reading my old Fanfic

It takes a bit of time to forget, but I do forget my old writing. And I am a different person now. I haven't written a fanfic in years. Now my fanworks consist of tumblr gifs and fan videos, but I do like to go back and check my old AO3 stats, and occasionally I will look at my old writings and see both my typos and failures along side some pretty good bits of writing that I forgot existed. So today I was reading Devil John, a story i wrote on commission back in 2015, and I found this nice piece of writing.
"John breathes out and the world materializes around him painting itself in, shadow by shadow, until the room is revealed in shimmering shades of darkness. He is at 221B Baker Street. Home.

Breathing in he smells familiar scents: The elegant dust which settles on the bookshelves and drapes. The odd chemical tang of one of Sherlock's forgotten experiments. The chalky taste of bone. The traitorous smell of cigarette smoke.

He catches his image in the mirror. His face is dark, shadowed, threatening. His black eyes shine like moonlight on an obsidian knife. He doesn't look human.

Black Dragon Blood burns when it goes down, but it settles inside John's bones as a warm heat that glows like anger. He feels dangerous."

I had real trouble with this because I didn't know how to gauge how much time I spent on each of the things I did last year. If I were to guess, my top media platforms were...

1. Youtube

3. Viki (streaming service)
4. Archive of our own
5. Pillowfort

What are your top five fandom spaces in terms of time spent?
To figure this out, I counted the posts and reblogs on my tumbr account by hand. It was enlightening, because I found out that I almost never completely leave a major fandom. One of my first fandoms was Star Trek, and it just missed making it into the top 6 fandoms.
I decided it would be more fun to do this as a countdown so starting from 5, I will countdown to my favorite fandoms of 2021 by post and reblog count.
6. (The runner Up) Yuri On Ice
Apparently summer makes me think of Ice Skating because I went through a real Yuri on Ice posting kick in June and July. Here is one of the fanvids I reblogged back then.

5. DANCE FANDOMS - Including STREET DANCE OF CHINA

I followed the actor Wang Yibo from one fandom into another. He was a leader on the show STREET DANCE OF CHINA which can be seen on You Tube, and I watched all of seasons 3 and 4. This re-activated my love of watching dances so much that I started a Youtube account just to do that. I also reblogged lots of dances that I had just found including this work by Lay that must have been inspired by the show (He was a host on SDOC as well).

It is a fusion hiphop/classical dance named after flying fairies from Asian art.

Snowflake Challenge #9 - Firsts and Faves (self recs)

Ten Years ago, I was definitely a fan, but I was not a member of FANDOM. I entered slowly when I was in a hard place emotionally, physically,and financially. I had watched the TV show Sherlock and I really liked it. I started a personal blog, joined tumblr, and a few month’s later, I had written my first fanfic. I became part of a community. After one of the purges on FanFiction,net, I started moving copies of my fic over to the newly formed Archive of our own.

Fandom urged me to really stretch myself and become incredibly creative. I went from a homebody afraid that someone might suspect that I read fanfiction, to creating blogs, fan videos, fan fiction, podfic,podcasts, and even to maintaining the Snowflake Challenge Community on Pillowfort!When I look back at the last decade, I am amazed at all the first that I have done since joining fandom. Because of it and you, I have grown into someone I never imagined that I could be, all for the love of fanworks.Thank you all for joining me in that love. Please enjoy some of my firsts and faves!

My husband thinks that I should take pictures from Ultraviolet, the 2006 movie with Mila Jovovich which was mostly style, but had some good sci-fi elements. And I am not completely averse to it. For one, it predicted 2020s Mask styles.

Sunshine Challenge - Day Five - Blue

I know that this is the last minute to post. 11:41pm by my clock, but when I think of Blue I remember the classic French movie by Krzysztof Kieślowski of that name. It is part of his three colors set of classic films, and I have adored it since the first time I saw it.

Because I doubt most of you are into international classic cinema in French, I wanted to make a music video, but because it is about composing music, I didn't feel right just using a pop song.

In fact, I used music from the film. I cut the video, and then scored it, but it was much too long. Most videos are about three minutes long, and Kieślowski can spend that long on a single shot. The story is a slow story about recovering from grief. It cannot be rushed!

So I divided the story into 5 videos. Because it is so long, it might get taken down, so watch it before it gets taken down. Needless to say SPOILERS. There is also one content warning for a suicide attempt in the first video. It is much too long, and probably misguided to make, but it was a labor of love. In your own space, make a list — anything between one and ten things is a sweet spot, but don't feel constrained by that! - of things that you wish existed in fandom or elsewhere, or that you'd like someone to make for you. Are you dying for podfic of your writing? Do you need icons for a character that doesn't get much fanart? Is there a story you want to read? Are you looking for new canons to get into? Would you like a collaborator for a project?

The thing that has kept me going in the Sherlock fandom has been the podfic. Podfic, if you don't know, are audio recordings of fanfic stories.

Sherlock has had some very, very consistent podficcers whom I love. That is to say, for the last two years, there have been podficcers posting nearly every single week day. I am not joshing. I would wake up to go to work, and my daily routine included downloading the day's podfic chapter to listen on my commute to work in the morning.

The first daily podficcer was Consulting Smartass, and when life made her drop out of it, Locked in Johnlock took over. She even changed her name to Podfixx so that she could post Good Omens fics and do commercial work as well.

Podfic has been part of my routine. If I had a wish, it would be to find more daily podfic to listen to.

I've been thinking about it, and what might be nice is to curate a playlist and put it up so that I can get a chapter a day. Make a channel, or a podcast, or an RSS feed. It would be a bit difficult to get permissions because people are fussy about their podfic, but when I tried to use soundcloud's natural Channel services, it shuffled the podfic chapters which was just WRONG.

Okay, bear with me. I'm thinking as I type.

I made a podcast about podfic called Midnight fic obsession where I would post excerpts of podfic so that people could find the originals to listen to, but sometimes the originals were hard to find. Have you ever looked for old podfic on AO3? Some of them were hosted on sites that are no longer there. They are LOST!

So reccing podfic is not enough. We need to preserve it.

What I want to be able to do, is to host/preserve entire podfic, and make an RSS feed that can be listened to like a radio channel or a podcast on a nice/ low cost or free service, that will allow setting up daily releases in advance so that I can put the Halloween fic in October and the Valentine fic in January, etc.

And this is hard because of the unwritten rules of fandom. It isn't possible to just license. people dislike losing control of their fic. They won't want me to store and broadcast a copy of their stories. And podfic hosting sites often have bans against explicit works.

But I can hear it in my head clear as glass. A channel where every morning, or every evening before I go to bed, I can listen to a serialized story from beginning to end, and then start another the next day. How can I make it a reality?

Do any of you listen to podfic daily? Who is still posting now, and in what fandoms?

Does anyone know how to make a daily RSS feed of someone else's chapters? Is this something Pillowfort can do? Comments, encouragement, or sympathy appreciated.

I listened to this Billie Eilish song and this just came to me! I did the entire thing over Labor Day weekend. Quick. It was as if it was written in the back of my head.

So long I have been politic about Mary. She is ambiguous not bad. One of the few interesting female characters in a male dominated show. We don’t want to show hate to Amanda Abbington who is a fan herself. I’ve been polite and civil all this time. But after season 4 where Mary continues to cockblock from the grave...I blame her old boyfriend... I think it’s time to take off the glove and have her account for her actions. Yes, we love Rosie, but...Damn! Mary was a steep price to pay for her.

Sunshine Challenge #2 - My Fannish Identity

My username came from the name of my favorite character, Aless, in the novel that still remains under my bed unwritten. Nox came from the username that I was assigned by Pottermore when it was still in beta. I like it because it can be one word, Alessnox, or two Aless Nox. The first is useful for forums, and the second doesn’t cause problems when I sign up for a new account and it asks for two names.
My vidding name SaturdayGirl2012 came from the fact that I often do my vidding on Saturdays, and because I thought that it sounded the most like a fourteen year old girl. When I made my first vid, I thought that you had to be a fourteen year old girl to make fan videos, and I didn’t want to stand out as the old fogy that I am.
I gave myself a new pen name when I wanted to write explicit fic, Moire.
I liked it because I always found the moire pattern sensual both visually and physically. It's silky and raised to the touch, illusory, and a bit out of wack. I planned to keep the two usernames separate, but after I posted work under that name, I realized that Archive of our own lumps all of your pen names together. It doesn’t hide anything. Oh well.

Each name has a specific purpose.
Moire – Experimental fiction, especially explicit works, and works in progress.
Alessnox – Finished works of Fan Fiction, and meta, and fan art or commentary
Saturdaygirl2012 – Fan videos
