So as the summer comes to a close, I find myself still in the midst of trying to record. I took on the, possibly insane, task of attempting to record The Quiet Man by Ivyblossom. Why?
Because everytime I go to my podfic library, I wonder why it isn't there to listen to. Sometimes you just have to solve problems yourself.

Ivyblossom says that it has been attempted before, but nothing was published. Working on it, I realize why. It seems deceptively simple. The story takes place almost entirely inside of the mind of John Watson, so you would think that it is simple. Just read what he is thinking, but not so, no not so at all.

John Watson's mind is incredibly complex.
First, he thinks so fast, there are paragraphs of monologue between one outside action and the next. Does this mean that we should read this quickly to fit the passage of time, or slowly? Then there are the voices.
1. Outside voices:
John and those he interacts with, his psychiatrist, Ella, his sister, Mrs Hudson, etc.
2. Inside voices
John's thoughts being the primary ones, but also John's voice as he talks to his imaginary image of Sherlock, and that is to be distinguished from his actual memories of events between Sherlock and himself.

It becomes a bit of a zoo to separate them. There are three different voices for John, and to start with two different voices for Sherlock. Eventually there will be three, and it will be important to tell them apart.

I am trying to do the separation simply with my voice and mic technique. I'm considering whether or not I need to use special effects for this. What do I mean? Let me give you an example.

1.You’re a very lonely man, I think. People need connection, physical touch. It’s not anything untoward. You are still a human being, whatever you may want other people to think of you. I know the truth. You’re not a machine. You’re more like a cat needing to be stroked; you like it when I touch your hair.

2.“You like it too.”

3. Do I? I suppose I do. It’s nice. Being able to.The way your eyes flicker shut. Pleasure on your face. I don’t know. It’s nice. What? Is that strange?

4. “You should have kissed me.” Goldfinger theme music is playing in the background.

“5. What? Why?”

6. “Because you wanted to.” Did I? I don’t remember that. You pick up the remote control and turn the volume down a little. That’s a real memory, not an altered one; you didn’t like the music. 7. Too discordant, you said. Bad audio quality. It’s like a screeching harpy in a thunderstorm. I laughed; I laughed a lot with you. I haven’t laughed in months.

8. “You could kiss me now.”

1. is John's normal voice. The voice of his thoughts that narrates the work. I do this by talking directly into the mike.
2. Is Sherlock's voice. The imaginary Sherlock that John talks to in his head. I do this by talking past the mike and deepening my voice.
3. Is John talking back to the imaginary Sherlock. I do this by talking past the mike.
4. This combines Imaginary Sherlock and Narrator John.
5. John talking to Imaginary Sherlock.
6. Imaginary Sherlock and John with a section of John quoting Sherlock in the past. What voice should I use for quoting Sherlock in the past? John's voice? John's voice with Sherlock's cadence? Imaginary Sherlock's voice?
8. Imaginary Sherlock again.

As you can see, this is incredibly complex, and this is only 8 lines of one chapter of a work with 58 chapters. It's hard enough just figuring out who is saying what without attempting to make them all sound different. Well, different but identifiable. I try, but I'm overcome with doubt, and that makes it very difficult to keep going.

Oh, and by the way, this is a call for beta listeners. I really could use help to know if the work is at all understandable.
Just pm me.
I could really use the help.
Aless.

One thing that always amazes me is the breadth of emotion that can be expressed in fanfiction. Here are my recommendations for two different podfics that induce very different emotions in the listener.
Rated T for language and mature concepts such as suicide. No explicit sex, but sex is implied in the second.

When his hour will come

PODFIC: http://www.audiofic.jinjurly.com/when-his-hour-will-come

After Sherlock's suicide and his own sister's death, John must take care of his sister's child alone.

In this story, John loses first Sherlock and then his sister, but instead of being left alone with his sorrow, he is the sole guardian of his sister's child, Ava, and must care for her. When past enemies pursue him, he must try to find a way to keep his daughter safe in a world where it is increasingly harder to get by.

This story is heartbreaking, and relentless, but very good. I just recently found that it has a sequel and I am hoping that things pick up for John and Ava in the future.

Triangulations

Part two of the Not Your Average Threesome series by Thirdbird. After John Watson gets kidnapped for the fifty-seven-zillionth time, Sherlock won't let him out of his sight even going so far as to sleep in the same bed. This puts a bit of a damper on John's new romantic relationship with Gregory Lestrade.

This one is funny, with enough serious bits to make the comedy work, and the most surprising part is how completely fine John is with being in the center of a threesome where one partner is asexual. It's light hearted and helps chase the doldrums away.

Both podfics are highly recommended.

First let it be said that I hate incest fics. Incest sets off all of my squick warnings. The closest to an incest fic that I can usually get to is something like Fruitsbasket where the incest or implied incest gives a creepy, malevolent background story. This being said...

The physics of present tense

The Physics of Present Tense

is the closest thing that I have ever seen to a incest!yeah fic. I downloaded this podfic and was surprised to find that it was in 10 parts. Going back, I found that it is four hours and forty one minutes long! Nevertheless, since I enjoy long form podfics, and I was in a good mood, I banished my husband from the room and began to listen to it.

Summary:
It happens instantaneously, but it takes years. It’s like looking up at the stars and spinning around with your arms out and letting gravity take you.

STORY
The story is seductive and interesting starting before Sherlock is born and passing year by year until we get to the series. A complete backstory for the Sherlock Mycroft relationship which informs us about things such as the skull, Victor Trevor, Mycroft and Lestrade, Sally Donovan, and the brothers' verbal sparring. Sometimes it seems like voyeurism. Sometimes it is immersive, thrusting us into a forbidden relationship that seems so very all-enveloping and intense.

The language is poetic. A susurrus of words that pool and form a story of an affection that grows, perhaps, a bit too narcissistic. Time passes quickly at first with little glimpses of their lives. Mycroft is the main character, but we jump from his point of view to that of his brother between chapters to show that this is more of an equal relationship than it may appear at first.

Mycroft is a believable character, in temperament he appears much as he is in the show. Sherlock borders on insanity. I'd say that he's the closest to being OOC although there isn't anything that I can point to off the top of my head to show this fact. This can be used to explain Mycroft's obsessive protectiveness of his brother which includes using spy cameras and paying off his friends. It explains the cake barbs and why Mycroft must be present after Sherlock almost gets himself killed. A very well thought out and complete world view that just serves to point out how curved-in their world is on itself. Besides being "men of the world", it seems as if the two of them only really see each other most of the time which also serves to explain why neither brother dates.

Although it doesn't look it, they form a united front. Sherlock's wildness serves as a release for Mycroft preventing his boredom. Mycroft's solidity and power protects Sherlock and allows him to do what he wants. As a character study it is an intoxicating work and I salute for such a well realized work.

PODFIC

It's hard to believe that this is zwischendenstuehlen's first podfic. The production values on this work are just excellent. As someone who struggles to make halfway decent podfics myself, I can appreciate the clear quality of the sound, the interweaving of the story with music and sound effects, and the clear separation of voices required to make this work. zwischendenstuehlen has a beautiful voice. She reads very well. The fact that this is not her native language may be one reason that she speaks slowly and with good intonation, making this an enjoyable story to listen to. The only problems were the mispronunciation of some words that made me silently re-say the words properly in my head, and one verbal glitch that is less than is found in most works that I have listened to. Overall, it has a very good sound, and I will probably listen to this more than once, which considering the subject is saying something.

So often we read stories showing Sherlock and John in middle age or younger. But do they live happily ever after? What does that look like? Although I feel my humble efforts are poor faced with the enormity of the genre, I thought that I'd start by expanding on a post that I wrote earlier for a friend writing her first Johnlock story. Here we go...wish me luck.

AN INTRODUCTION TO JOHNLOCK

1. It's Sherlock (Bloody) Holmes!

Who hasn't heard of Sherlock Holmes? The stories of Sherlock Holmes and John Watson have been fan favorites since they first came out in the 19th century, but lately there has been a plethora of stories showing these two characters as being romantically involved. These fan fiction stories are collectively called JOHNLOCK ( an abbreviation of John/Sherlock) and the reason that these stories have exploded recently is because of the new BBC television show SHERLOCK that has a younger Holmes than is normally portrayed, and is set in present day London.

In the first episode, Sherlock Holmes meets retired Army Doctor John Watson and they move in together. Their friendship is rapid. The chemistry is electric, and it is an excellent example of a 21st century Bromance (a close non-sexual relationship between two (or more) men[wikipedia]).

So why the interest in writing John/Sherlock fiction now?

Well first off, the actors are gorgeous. I mean just look at them. Second, John Watson in this show is not written as a complete idiot as he normally is. He is actually quite impressive, a doctor and an ace marksman. Very lickable. It doesn't take long for certain impressionable minds to start to wish for reasons to imagine them with their clothes off.

But the real reason is that the characters as drawn in the show have a certain fragile dependency. They are both introduced as slightly broken men. They are talented, but flawed. When they get together, they make a whole greater than its parts, and considering how great they were before, this is saying something! Their friendship is so compelling that it leaves many people wanting more.

2. Why Johnlock?
The point of JohnLock is simple. Take two complex and beautiful characters and somehow get them into bed with each other. This can be quite challenging as the show is quite clear that they are NOT sleeping with each other and that John is NOT gay. Show canon also says that Sherlock is a virgin, and Arthur Conan Doyle canon says that he is basically asexual, therefore making us believe that they would ever have a sexual relationship is difficult. This is part of what makes this genre so compelling. Only the bravest and best writers can succeed at this task, and when they do. It is wonderful.

Lazy Johnlock authors solve this problem simply by saying that all of the facts above are a lie. Sherlock is often portrayed as promiscuous and John as openly gay. This is cheating, but it is fairly common.

A good Johnlock author must make us believe that either we or the characters themselves are mistaken about these facts. Then, we can get them together. The elaborate dance is one of the greatest joys of Johnlock, and many solutions to this problem have been made, some more successful than others.

3. What in the hell are they talking about?
First lets get some vocabulary out of the way,

FIRST TIME

A first time Johnlock is a story that conveys either a first kiss or a first sexual encounter between the two. This is most of the stories I think. Like I said, this is the hard part. Once you get them together you are mostly home free.

So how is this FIRST TIME usually accomplished?

EXPERIMENT

This is a story where the initiator of the romance is Sherlock. He convinces John to do increasingly more intimate acts by saying that it is an experiment.

WOKE UP GAY or WE'RE NOT GAY; WE JUST LOVE EACH OTHER

These are stories where John realizes that he is NOT as heterosexual as he thought when he starts having sexual thoughts about Sherlock.

Some common plot lines include:

  • UNNATURAL CAUSES These are where John and Sherlock are drawn together by some unnatural event. For example, maybe John is a werewolf or were-velociraptor and Sherlock becomes part of his pack and therefore drawn to him.
  • EXTRAORDINARY CIRCUMSTANCES They are about to die (not that uncommon), and one of them admits feelings for the other. They have sex. They may not both be gay, but they want so much to please the other person that they do it anyway because of their strong feelings for each other.

But most Johnlock begins with the affection that the characters already show for each other in the series. There are enough dangerous situations in their everyday life to push the characters into a confession. Because the two are already friends, their greatest fear is usually that a romantic relationship will ruin their friendship and cause them to separate. This is a real fear, and a good Johnlock writer must make us believe that things are better. Writing good Johnlock is a challenge.

The best JohnLock is slow. It is a war of attrition where their defenses are worn away little by little until they can't help but be together. It is a very specialized and interesting form of romance, and after such a build up, you have to have the sex, or (as Moriarty said) "What is the point of this?"

I lie a bit because there are many CUDDLEFICS out there. In these, John and Sherlock have a romantic relationship, but mostly this is shown through cuddling. Most often cuddlefics are ACE!Sherlock. That is John likes Sherlock romantically, but Sherlock remains asexual so cuddles and kisses are as far as he's going to get. As you will see, the Sherlock fandom is a vast sea.

4. Not that I'm homophobic, but why should I read this?

Because Johnlock has some of the best writing on the internet, hands down. The Sherlock fandom is highly educated. Excellent writers flood this genre, and when you have characters as interesting as John Watson and Sherlock Holmes, it draws them like a moth to a flame. Also, the stories vary from incredibly sweet, to extreme Angst, to stories so hot that you think they'll set the mouse on fire. You don't want to miss this stuff. It's Fantabulous!

5. Johnlock recommendations

Here are some stories to start with.

A Visit from a Lady
By Aless Nox

Sherlock flipped the edge of the curtain with his fingers turning to look at John with a smile. “A customer,” he said, “show the lady in.” The doorbell rang and John rushed down the steps returning a few minutes later to raise his eyebrow at Sherlock as he escorted in a woman with long blond hair.

She was dressed all in green, down to her vinyl boots. On someone else, it would have looked a joke, like a pixie or an elf, but on her it brought out the brightness of her golden hair and highlighted the deep green of her eyes.

“Please have a seat Miss ah...what is your name?” Sherlock asked.

John straightened in surprise. ”You don‘t know?” John said, “Don’t tell me you’ve never heard of Marianne Doe?

"Why should I know her?" Sherlock said.

The woman smiled. “This is exactly why I’ve come,” she said, “Mr Holmes, you have a reputation as a heartless man.”

“Is that what you need?” Sherlock asked, “A man without a heart?”

“Yes,” the woman replied fluttering her long, blond eyelashes, “Love is a terrible thing.” she said, “I hate love.”

Sherlock examined the woman from head to toe and then said, “Your life has been threatened. Is there a note?”

“Yes,” she said while unzipping, “He left it on my body.”

SPOILERS FOLLOW

Reading Sherlock fan fiction, especially Sherlock return stories, is like living in a world of parallel universes. Each story paints an image of a possible future where the smallest choices create different dynamics in the relationship between Sherlock Holmes and John Watson. One of these stories, The Quiet Man by paints a world with an ending so sweet that we want to close our eyes and let it linger for a moment as Sherlock does in one key point in the story.

This work, an epic at over 157,000 words, tells the story of John Watson enduring the loss of Sherlock Holmes for three years before his eventual return. Needless to say, there is a lot of angst in this work. John Watson spends most of his time feeling lost and horribly depressed. Some of the early chapters are a bit slow as John continues to live in a fantasy world where the image of Sherlock talks with him, and he seems to make no progress forward, but his story picks up again after we meet Mary.

The Sherlock return story is one of tension and expectations. We know that Sherlock will some time come into the picture, and we know that what happens to John during this separation will have a great part in deciding how their reunion will go. Will he marry Mary? Will he commit suicide? Will he tell his therapist his true feelings? Will he learn to hate Sherlock? Each decision affects the outcome.

In this version of the story, John becomes a  writer for The Strand magazine, just as in the original Sir Arthur Conan Doyle books. He works through his feelings for Sherlock while creating the novelization of his blog as he continues to be haunted by images of Sherlock that he seems to see everywhere. When he finally does encounter Sherlock, we are still left wondering how he will act. Will he be able to accept this sudden change in circumstances?

The story doesn't try to go too fast. It lets us comes to terms with each decision as John does, allowing him a depth of characterization that is underscored by the title "The quiet man".  John now thinks a great deal before he speaks, and we are spectators viewing his thoughts. The story is in first person. We stay deep in John's mind. Like him, we don't know what Sherlock was doing on the rooftop at Barts, and when we meet him, we don't know what he's thinking. It makes everything a bit muffled and uncertain as John is when he goes through the world uncertain of who he is and what he should be doing.

It is mostly a work of mood. it spends its time conveying the sense of loss and mourning that John endures. This makes the story a bit of a downer in parts, but it is alleviated by the interesting experiences and observations that John makes of the world around him.

The story is very well written and beta-edited. The explicit rating comes from some fantasy scenes  and a few sex scenes at the very end of the story, as well as some violence.

At fifty eight chapters, this story is a bit of a commitment, but it is well worth the effort. Although the road of loss is long, ultimately the reunion is beautifully sweet.

Being a steward of the British Nation is hard work, but not, it seems, as hard as taking care of his wild-child younger brother Sherlock. When his loner brother suddenly takes a flatmate, Mycroft wonders what is happening, and who is this Dr. John H. Watson.
Sherlock fanfic
Genre: POV, angst, friendship
Rating: mild - sensuality, allusions to torture, same sex romance,
Words: 16,776
Published: 8-4-12
Characters: Mycroft H. & John W.

This story gets the most consistent amount of reads of anything that I have written. It starts at the beginning of series one and ends at Reichenbach, but it never leaves the point of view of Mycroft Holmes.

I started this to explore some inconsistencies that I saw in Mycroft's character. In other portrayals of Sherlock Holmes, Mycroft is far more removed and cold. He and Sherlock hardly ever talk. The overprotective brother shown in BBC's Sherlock is very different from those portrayals. I began to wonder what kind of life this solitary man led. How did he live, what did he value, and especially what did he think of John Watson? This also gave me an opportunity to comment on the John/Sherlock relationship from the outside.

I could have kept Mycroft cold and heartless, but he doesn't come across that way in the show. He actually seems quite affectionate, in his way. In fact, he was very polite and respectful to John after their initial meeting, and I began to wonder if he might feel something more. It was the scene in the coffee shop that got me. Why was Mycroft in a coffee shop with John? Why was he downstairs instead of upstairs pestering his brother? It seemed out of character. Then I thought, this is not the first time that John and Mycroft have met to talk about Sherlock. They must have this entire relationship with each other separate from Sherlock's relationship with John. My eyes widened and my mouth dropped open as I contemplated it. When did it start? What do they discuss? How often do they meet? John isn't getting paid, what does he get out of it? Are they friends?

I imagined a John that was friends with both of the Holmes brothers. WOW, what a strange and special person he must be to be able to accomplish that. And there it began.

In this story, I was able to use a very formal writing structure taking note of the openings and closings of sections and having a bit of a circular ending. As a challenge, it was quite an accomplishment, and I am proud of it.

If you have a chance to read it, tell me what you think.

STORY TEXT:
   http://archiveofourown.org/works/173274/chapters/253157

At over seven hours this fanfic is not for faint of heart or the casual Sherlockian, however it is perfect for a long day of solitary housework. I must warn you, however, that at some scenes you will want to just close your eyes and listen because the images are particularly intense and evocative, especially if you are as much of a fan of the John / Sherlock pairing as I am.

OVERVIEW:
Sherlock Holmes is in love with his flatmate, John Watson, unfortunately he is unable to express his feelings. John Watson appears to like him, but his mixed messages are hard for Sherlock to understand, and then Mary Morstan walks into John's life.

PODFIC
The reader, cellardoorpodfic, has a pleasant voice that is not annoying to listen to which is important in a story of this length. She makes distinct, recognizable voices for John, Mary, Mycroft, Sherlock, and Sherlock's thoughts that make it possible to understand Sherlock's story.

The podfic has a foreword by the author, ivyblossom, that discusses the narrative structure, first person present tense. We only see things from Sherlock's perspective. We may infer what others feel, but we don't know for sure what they are thinking.

MY IMPRESSIONS:
This work has a soothing, lyrical quality. Sherlock is a strange person with strange thoughts, but the author makes us comfortable in his head. This Sherlock thinks about John a lot. John also often thinks of Sherlock, but his intentions are unclear to Sherlock. They dance around each other for what may be months or years not talking and not understanding each other. In a way, the story evokes a bit of the Victorian quality of the original, because there are so many things that they cannot or will not say.

Mary is a flawed woman with philandering ways. She is so good at hiding her emotions that most of the time Sherlock cannot read her. John tries to lead his own life, but he is unable to stop working with Sherlock for long before his limp reappears. Mrs Hudson is a jewel, seeing to the heart of the story, when most of the other characters are blind to their own and other's emotions.

If there is a villain to the piece, then it is Mycroft Holmes who interferes too closely in his brother's affairs. If we assume that he treats all of Sherlock's acquaintances the same as he did to John Watson when he first met Sherlock, then we might get a glimpse into why Sherlock has no friends, and why he hates his brother so much.

RATING: Mature

This work is rated mature for graphic sex scenes, however they do not take up most of the work which consists of bits of interesting cases, texts, flirting, and lots of suggestive and sensual touching followed by Sherlock's ever unsure interpretations.

ANGST
The sense of loss and longing in the story is palpable, for Sherlock (our viewpoint character) but also for John who wears his heart on his sleeve. John is trapped between his desire to live with his wife, and his almost physical need to be with Sherlock.

Mary is a complication that makes a successful romantic resolution difficult, and when the resolution does come, it is not without it's share of discomfort. We get the feeling that Sherlock Holmes is a very misunderstood man doing his best to interact with people although he is horribly repressed and unable to communicate his true feelings to others. Perhaps it is only that no one has ever listened closely enough before.

Overall, the story is worth the listen if only for those moments when John and Sherlock finally begin to realize that each of them truly do have feelings for each other that go beyond friendship. The sex scenes are good too.

PEOPLE
For the most part, the other characters fade into shadows. John and Sherlock think almost constantly about each other to the exclusion of all else. The fact that they can't see what's in front of their eyes is sad. Then again, this is what makes the conclusion more satisfying. Even so, one is left with a sense of regret, if only they had communicated a bit better a few years earlier, then we could have missed all of this angst.

PLOT
The plot is what the title says. The progress of Sherlock Holmes as he goes from totally sexually repressed and uncommunicative to sexually active and slightly more emotionally open. Other than that, the days are fairly repetitive for Sherlock, (case, no case, case, no case). We never are given a complete case to investigate. Mostly Sherlock just looks at things and deduces with John there to say "Amazing!" The only thing that gives a sense of time to Sherlock's existence is John and his relationship with Mary. John is the timepiece for the work. The clock on which Sherlock's life runs, and this more than anything tells us that there is only one satisfying resolution to this work.

WORRY POINTS
If I have any criticisms of the work, it would be in the obviousness of making Mary so flawed. It seemed like her faults were paraded by us just so that we would not pity her so much when John's affections turned to Sherlock. Mycroft was surprisingly noteworthy because he ended up being such a shit. They explained his viewpoint in the end, but even so, I just didn't like him. Also, his ability to control Sherlock with petty, though very expensive, bribes made Sherlock come off as a bit too juvenile and materialistic in my opinion. Despite these minor faults, overall I consider this story an excellent work, and a very well executed podfic.

My rankings (0 yuck to 5 WoW!)

Romance: good 4
Hotness: good 3.5
Mood: excellent 4.5
Case Quality: fair, interesting 2.5

Overall: 4

If sex is what you are interested in, the Sherlock fan community does not disappoint. There are many, many Sherlock stories that are mature or erotic in nature. The most popular pairing is John Watson with
Sherlock Holmes as it seems that one look at the way the two stare at each other in the show is enough to make the mildest mannered fan girl go out and write smut.

When it comes to audiofics, it seems that there is hardly one that does NOT have an erotic scene somewhere in the story, but not all erotica is equal and so here are some of my favorites.

Abundantly queer, author of the popular "Two Two One Bravo Baker" Sherlock AU Series, knows how to write sex scenes. This story, or I should say these stories, are set in between the episodes in Season one of Sherlock. The basic premise is stated by Sherlock himself in the first episode. “After a case, food, sex, sleep -- not always in that order... I’ve eaten, I’m not ready to sleep -- so, time to have sex.”

Episode 1 -
Set after 'A study in Pink' where Sherlock propositions John for a one night stand and John agrees.

Episode 2 -

After the Blind Banker. Sarah leaves in shock and Sherlock propositions John again because "one time things sometimes happen twice".

Episode 3 - Arms Race
In the limbo between episode 2 and 3, Sherlock gets turned on watching John fire a rifle and asks for more sex, this time with a gun.

Basically this is a 'plot, what plot?' series that is very hot, although I have difficulty with the last one as I not only don't have a gun fetish, but I have a "I don't care if that thing is not loaded don't you point it toward me!" attitude toward guns.

Oh and yes you should know that this is homosexual sex folks, so if it freaks you out, these works are DEFINITELY not for you.

The second series in the Hottest Sherlock list is the Paradox series.

I know it's weird to list an entire series, but the Sherlock and John characters are pretty unique. In this version, Sherlock is fairly crazy and their sex is fairly kinky with asphyxiation and in the last episode some whipping.

But this series is hot for a totally different reason than the first one. The 'Warzone' series is hot like a one night stand is. There is passion and exciting times, but it's flash in the pan and over quickly. The paradox series has a slow creeping sensual attitude that builds up the unusual relationship by showing the strange ways that Sherlock and John bend over backwards (sometimes literally) to give each other pleasure. Sherlock has a list of all his kinks 'fine' and 'not fine' and they work through them during the course of the series with an occasional detour into what turns John on.

My favorite is probably still

but I have a warm spot for "The Dying of the Bees", especially part 3
